"The 1Ds Mark III has replaced all of the medium and large format cameras that I previously owned. While I miss the "feel" of certain cameras and the fun of looking at an image on the big 4x5 ground glass, I have not regretted unloading that equipment; even after taking a serious loss on its' sale. My clients have never complained about the switch from film to digital; including the artists who now receive their copy-work files generated by the 1Ds Mark III. The large file sizes give more than enough information to maintain detail even after cropping. I am able to use the iso 1600 setting comfortably when I set the noise reduction to "1" in the Canon Digital Pro software during conversion. If extreme detail in large prints turn you on, then shoot multiple images and merge them together in software later. A recent panorama of a forest "clear-cut" that I produced measured 2 feet by 10 feet. The detail is ridiculous! I hope that in spite of bringing out an even larger megapixel camera in the form of a 1Ds Mark IV, that Canon will continue the production of this excellent camera. The fact that the wide angle lenses can now match the quality of the big chips is another reason to consider this full frame monster. The current cost of the camera makes it very attractive too. Buy it now, or kick yourself later." BACK TO TOP

"I used the 1D IV alongside my 5D II for five weddings and the AF on the 1D IV started to hunt in low light about 1 stop worse than the 5D II. It's more like the 40D in low light. If this could be fixed and a full frame sensor swapped into this camera, it would be perfect for weddings. Other than that, autofocus in good light is very snappy. ISO is cleaner than the 5DII by about 1 stop, and it's noise is of a variety that cleans up better. White balance was very accurate until there was a lot of amber light at 3200 and 6400 ISO, where is got confused a bit. Light metering was also more accurate than the 5D II. Because of its heavier weight, there was less shake and my hand-held keeper rate was higher. The LCD screen was slightly better (more accurate) than my 5D II. Ergonomically, the 1D IV is awesome to hold, and it's built like a tank. The battery lasted longer than the 5D II. I'm hoping for a 1DN IV that fixes the low light AF, and I'm willing to live with the 1.3 crop because it's really a great camera otherwise. 26 of 26 people found this review helpful." BACK TO TOP

"Pros: Fast Autofocus, Great Iso Performance, High Fps When Needed, 14 Bit Color, Professional Build And Feel, Dual Memory Card Slots- Priceless! This is an excellent camera. I got a great deal on this purchasing it used from someone that upgraded to the Mark IV. I had the opportunity to use this to photograph a wedding recently and have used it for portraits as well. While I have owned it a short time, I am very pleased with its capabilities. The Autofocus capabilities in low light during for wedding use are miles ahead of any camera I have used(entry level and mid range DSLRs), noise appears to be very low even at higher ISOs, even 3200 is usable in my opinion(although I still prefer to stay with low when possible and use flash, but it is nice to have the option to go higher when I need to shoot available light). The ISO safety shift is a great feature, and the ability to really customize the camera to your needs is great, once you get used to the operation of the camera it is quite intuitive and easy to adjust settings on the go. Very impressive burst speed, and the ability to save to more than one memory card for image backup is priceless(especially for wedding photographers). I highly recommend this camera(or the Mark IV if money allows). I chose this over the 7D or 5D Mark ii because of the ability to backup images in camera, but the other features this camera has are an added bonus." BACK TO TOP

"
Pros: Good Battery Life, Nice Features/Settings, Quick Start-Up Time, Excellent Image Quality, Superior Build Quality, Bright LCD, Simple Controls/Menu, Easy To Use I have researched the 7D and 50d extensively. I decided on the 50d based on the excellent reviews and price. The 50D is amazing and the best Canon camera I've owned (and I've like all the previous models). The pictures are remarkably sharp with vibrant colors. One feature I particularly like is the ability to customize the settings to your individual shooting preferences. I also like the ergonomics and ease of use. My former camera is the XSI. It's a great camera but can't compare to the 50D. This is a much more professional model. The 50D may not have all the bells and whistles of the 7D but I can't imagine that the picture quality could be that much better. For me, that's the bottom line. At its current price, this camera is a real bargain." BACK TO TOP

"Pros: Good Battery Life, Nice Features/Settings, Quick Start-Up Time, Excellent Image Quality I have been a Canon point-and-shoot user for several years and was looking to upgrade to a DSLR for the first time. I definitely wanted a Canon, as I was already familiar with the menu and controls, so I chose the XS because of its price point. With the higher models only providing a few additional autofocus points, a couple megapixels, and the ability to use a wireless remote control, I don't regret my decision "just" to get the XS! I have never felt like I settled. The image quality is incredible, especially in lower light conditions when 800 and 1600 ISO settings are necessary. A few other reviews have commented on battery life being an issue, but I've been able to take 600+ pictures (with no flash) without even getting a low battery warning, so that must be an isolated issue. I have absolutely nothing negative to say about this camera. While it won't be as portable to someone who is used to the convenience of a point-and-shoot, it is much lighter than many other DSLR models on the market (especially those that are older). You won't regret this purchase for a second!" BACK TO TOP

"Pros: Superior Build Quality, Excellent Image Quality, Nice Features/Settings, Quick Start-Up Time, Solid Operation, Easy To Use, Good Battery Life Cons: Noisy, Bigger Grip To Hold Lens More Comfortably Some people have complained that the battery doesn' t last long enough, others that the camera is loud, although they all agree that the 5D Mark II is a fantastic camera. Here is my take on it: I took over 1000 pictures and my battery is still 70% full... I take only RAW pictures, so each is over 22 MB in size. So why are there complaints about the battery? Most likely the CF card used is not fast enough! I think that if you buy a CF card that has write speed of 600X, you will not have the short battery life problem! You will find that the camera is loud, however, but if that really bothers you, read the manual the camera comes with. There is a way to reduce the noise! I personally never had a better camera before (I also own a 5D). I now take pictures that are truly sharp, clear, and I am able to capture fun blurred motions as well when my subjects (animals, nature's critters, and flowers) move too fast. I recommend this camera strongly to anyone, even amateurs, because this will make amateur pictures look near-professional! My only problem is that while the cameras are getting smaller and lighter, the good lenses are larger and heavier. This combination makes it quite hard to hold the camera comfortably with a telephoto lens, for example. I own EF 300 mm f/4L IS USM and when the hood is fully open, my small hands can barely hold the camera. As it is not always possible to follow a speedy humming bird with a camera on tripod, I must hold it for extended time in my hands. It is rare that I am not sore or cramp up after 30 minutes of holding the camera with that lens. CANON: I think a larger grip, a wrist band, or a bracket against the chest might work! Please look into that Canon!" BACK TO TOP

"Pros: Good Battery Life, Nice Features/Settings, Excellent Image Quality, Superior Build Quality, Bright LCD Cons: Software Compatibility I bought this camera as an upgrade to my EOS 30D. The Canon EOS 7D is certainly a solid upgrade: This camera works well for a variety of subjects; I have used it to shoot sports, wildlife, landscapes, architecture, weddings and portraiture. The APS-C size sensor is compatible with EF and EF-S lenses, a capability lost on cameras with full-frame sensors. This can be a factor, if you have multiple EF-S lenses and want to continue using them with the 7D. The high ISO range (up to 12,800) eclipses low light settings, like school gyms, and multiple noise reduction settings keep grain to acceptable levels. Also, 8 frames-per-second shooting lets me capture detailed sequential motion series of animals and athletes. Tracking moving subjects works very well in AI Servo mode. Capturing birds in flight with a 500mm super telephoto lens--handheld--is not a challenge for this camera. Plus, the AI Servo mode can be customized to meet various in-motion subject demands. The 7D features a Q, or Quick Control, button which displays 16 camera settings. User's can change each via the Quick Control dial or the Main Dial. This saves critical time, and proves invaluable, if you are shooting an event like a wedding ceremony, where you can't have a "re-do." The 7D is packed with 27 Custom Functions in four categories: Exposure, Image, AutoFocus/Drive, and Operation/Others. You can also display the Electronic Level, a Electronic Grid, auto focus points being used in your images, hot spots in images, etc. These features give feedback on what's good, and bad, about an image, saving frustration in the end. With the 7D, files are big. Consider Image Quality selection carefully; if you shoot RAW+JPEG, your file sizes will exceed 25MB. You can fill up a 4GB CF card with 160, or fewer, images. Use high-end compact flash cards to improve data storage rate. Also, see if you computer can handle the demand of such file sizes, and verify your programs are compatible with the RAW format. There are compatibility issues between the 7D's RAW format images and some of my editing programs. To compensate, I convert RAW images to JPEG in Canon's Digital Photo Professional for later editing; or, I select JPEG image quality prior to shooting. I expect editing program updates to fix this issue. I highly encourage owners to read the user's manual and set up their 7D to match their shooting style and to take advantage of these capabilities. You can even download video tutorials from Canon onto the 7D and play them on the camera's LCD. Overall, I am very pleased with my EOS 7D, and I recommend it to anyone wanting to purchase an affordably priced, professional grade camera." BACK TO TOP

"
Pros: Excellent Image Quality, Superior Build Quality, Lightweight/Portable, Easy To Use Cons: Hard To Find Much Wrong It's hard to fault this camera, especially for the price. I wanted something like the 7D, but with a little less weight and a bit more compact for traveling, and with a bit more control and "quality" than the T2i (I have all three cameras). The 60D feels very nice, quite similar in feel to the 7D. I've been using the 60D mainly with the 15mm-85mm EF-S lens, but it works very nicely with the excellent 70-200mm F/2.8 IS II lens. Pictures are well saturated, crisp, not over-sharpened, and the 60D handles a wide range of exposures well, from 30-second night exposures to 1/4000 sec sports photos without any problems. Noise is well controlled up to ISO 800, begins to become noticeable at ISO 1600. I don't recommend ISO 3200+ for anything but low quality snap-shots. ISO 100 shots are absolutely stunning at all exposure durations. Battery life is extremely impressive. This is a serious alternative to the 7D, especially for the weight conscious photographer who doesn't want to give up the control features of the 7D. Video is up to par with the 7D. Highly recommended!" BACK TO TOP
